Shallow – Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper

Verse 1:
Tell me somethin’, girl
Are you happy in this modern world?
Or do you need more?
Is there somethin’ else you’re searchin’ for?
I’m falling

In all the good times I find myself
Longin’ for change
And in the bad times I fear myself

Tell me something, boy
Aren’t you tired tryin’ to fill that void?
Or do you need more?
Ain’t it hard keeping it so hardcore?I’m falling
In all the good times I find myself
Longing for change
And in the bad times I fear myself

Chorus:
I’m off the deep end, watch as I dive in
I’ll never meet the ground
Crash through the surface, where they can’t hurt us
We’re far from the shallow now
In the shallow, shallow
In the shallow, shallow
In the shallow, shallow
We’re far from the shallow nowOh, oh, oh, oh

Whoah!
Chorus:
I’m off the deep end, watch as I dive in
I’ll never meet the ground
Crash through the surface, where they can’t hurt us
In the shallow, shallow

In the shallow, shallow
In the shallow, shallow
We’re far from the shallow now

I recently watched A Star is Born and was left bawling my my eyes out. Maybe it’s just my sensitive and crybaby personality, but it was truly a beautiful film. Bradley Cooper did an amazing job with his first film, capturing the essence of two flawed beings trying to overcome the struggle of addiction and social pressure from this messed up world. With his co-star being the one and only Lady Gaga, I can’t stress enough how good this film is. As a musician, I definitely related to this in the sense that I often conform to social pressure. However, it’s music that always brings me back to my roots.

Damn. I didn’t think I’d get this real so fast. But I think it’s better if we just move on and take a look at the lyrics.

Tell me somethin', girl
Are you happy in this modern world?
Or do you need more?
Is there somethin' else you're searchin' for?

The first verse is spoken by Bradley Cooper’s character: Jack, a world renowned rock star who struggles living as an alcoholic. He talks to Ally, a reluctant waitress who dreams of becoming a singer. He questions her if she is happy being complacent, or if she wants more. How I would love for Bradley Cooper to ask me a question. Or just talk to me. Or look at me. Or be in the same room as me. Is this getting creepy? Sorry, but I mean, it’s Bradley Cooper.

I'm falling
In all the good times I find myself
Longing for change
And in the bad times I fear myself

“I’m falling” could have two meanings.

  1. This is Jack’s way of saying that he is falling back to his addiction to alcohol. There are often times throughout the movie where after several days of sober Jack, he falls back into the toxicity of his alcoholic self.
  2. This could also mean (and probably is the most likely reason for including this lyric) that he is falling for Ally. Though they’ve only met, he shows her his most vulnerable self and she receives it all with open arms.

The next few lines indicate such powerful words; words that I believe we can all relate to. During our good days, we are most likely more confident in who we are, as everything around us seems to be going well.

We long for change as we have the positivity, motivation, and mindset that we can pretty much do anything we set our minds to. When I learned that I got accepted into university, I was outright happy and confident. And even proud of myself, knowing that a task I was so afraid of before, I ended up achieving on my own. However, in the bad times, we do fear ourselves. In Jack’s case, whenever something bad happened, he would turn to alcohol. This creates a sense of fear as we sometimes lose control of ourselves, and become afraid of what we are capable of doing. It’s pretty ironic how our ability to pursue anything is embraced differently, depending on our good or bad times. We are told to do this and not to do that, depending on the context of the situation. This sometimes makes me questions humanity’s true meaning of freedom. Hmm. Well, maybe I’m just overthinking.

The next part of the verse is sang by Lady Gaga’s character Ally. She talks back to Jack, is if they were having a conversation through song. She questions him about filling that void with alcohol. This “void” he refers to is his troublesome relationship he’s had with both his brother and father. She also points out his disguise as this rock, hardcore dude who isn’t afraid of anything. When in reality, I think Jack is full of pain and fear (as I’ve discussed above).

These words also spoke a lot to me. I know a lot of people who are struggling with issues in their past, and turn to drugs or alcohol to fill that void of dealing with the pain. Or trying to overcome the pain. They believe that they have reached their rock bottom, having no way of climbing up. But I think that the moment one succumbs to drugs or alcohol, that is when they reach rock bottom. Not to say that one should be ashamed of their addictions, as I have family members who deal with one themselves. I’m saying that once you’ve reached the bottom, the only way now to go is up. Whether you suffer from an addiction, or going through something bad, no where does it indicate that you aren’t strong enough to fight through it. To live through it. We are flawed people. We feel alone, but it doesn’t mean we are alone.

To be honest, I kind of just went on a tangent there. But what I am basically trying to say is that it is normal for us to try to fill that pain with something else. For a lot of people, it may be with substances. But I pray and hope that you, or anyone who may be going through something, start filling that void with something else. With the thing you love, whether it be singing, painting, or dancing. With the people who care about you. And with the love you deserve for yourself.

Chorus:
I'm off the deep end, watch as I dive in
I'll never meet the ground
Crash through the surface, where they can't hurt us
We're far from the shallow now
In the shallow, shallow
In the shallow, shallow
In the shallow, shallow
We're far from the shallow nowOh, oh, oh, oh

Whoah!

Firs of all, if you’ve listened to the chorus, then you know why casting Lady Gaga was a genius idea. The emotion and dynamic of her voice during the chorus is what got me crying. The moment when they sang this song in the movie was such a treasure. It was Ally’s first time singing in front of a full live audience; a moment that I seriously one day would want to experience.

Ally writes the chorus before her breakthrough. The chorus alludes to her relationship with Jackson, but mostly her dream of becoming an artist. Diving off deep end refers to losing the fear and insecurity of taking the risk as an artist. She lets go and enables herself to just be Ally doing what she loves most. She talks about never meeting the ground, as to reference the high she feels while seeing her dreams come true with the man she loves. By crashing through the surface, this alludes to how their love is unbreakable.

As seen throughout the movie, both characters experience obstacles. However, it’s the love they have for each other that help them grow and bring them back together as one. They are inspired by one another leading a life far from the shallow – assuming that shallow refers to any heartache, pain, darkness, and trouble we as people tend to avoid.  The dynamic between the two characters is one that is so genuine; an aspect on couples rarely seen in cinematic culture. They seemed like a real life couple, in which I just got to watch through the screen. *sigh* It’s movies like this as well as Valentines Day lurking around the corner that make me feel quite sad about my love life.

I did not expect to talk about certain issues within this post, however I do believe that is why writing is sometimes therapeutic. Your thoughts just go wild yet you are able to calm them down by seeing them. Now that I think about it, what I just said could totally be some Tumblr post or tweet.

A Star is Born is one of the best movies in 2018. I suggest that you all do yourselves a favour and go watch it. And then afterwards, have yourself a good cry. And then non stop listen to the soundtrack for weeks. (I will link the Spotify soundtrack at the bottom for you all to listen!).

This song is so beautiful and perfect and I can’t stress enough the importance the messages this song brings upon us. I hope you all are inspired by it and by the movie, as it truly inspired me to keep writing songs and to never stop being, well, me.
